History
In the spring of 2011, Congregation Sha’arei Torah/The Village Shul(CST) was born. Founded in response to community members interested in the development of a vibrant, participant-driven Modern Orthodox synagogue in Amberley Village, CST quickly became a cornerstone of the Cincinnati Jewish community. We carefully chose our name Sha’arei Torah “Gates of Torah,” in the plural form, to reflect one of our core beliefs. We all strive to follow the same Torah and are committed to halakhic observance. At the same time, we recognize that a life of Torah can be reached through many paths.
Indeed, within weeks of its founding, CST found itself with dozens of member families and countless volunteer leaders. Since that time, we have only continued to grow and expand. In August 2013, we were delighted to welcome Rabbi Ezra Goldschmiedt, a dynamic young leader as our rabbi. Rabbi Goldschmiedt and his wife Elyssa embody our philosophy of creating a welcoming experience for Jews from diverse backgrounds who desire to grow in their Judaism. And grow we did. In a very short period of time we attracted many new members thereby necessitating the need to build our permanent home.
With the help of many generous members and friends, Sha’arei Torah purchased a 6.4 acre site at in the heart of Amberley Village. The acreage is both picturesque and centrally located close to most of our members’ homes. Indeed, the site boasts mature trees, water features, and rolling hills. Our new sanctuary is now complete and we celebrated Rosh Hashanah 2014 in our new shul.
We are proud of our short history and what we have accomplished, but we are more excited about our future.
Sha’arei Torah welcomes you to join us.
Our Campus and Building
In 2012, property was purchased in Amberley Village to serve as the site for a permanent home for Congregation Sha’arei Torah, AKA the Village Shul. The new synagogue building is a one story structure designed to nestle into the 6.4 acres of the property’s wooded and rolling terrain.
The building was designed by a committee of synagogue members, led by past presidents Howard Mayers and Norman Frankel, architect Michael Maltinsky, and Jeff Epstein. Similarly, the Aron Kodesh was designed by a committee of shul members, led by architect Michael Maltinsky, Cynthia and Bob Rosen, and artist Shoni Golin-Cahn. The beautiful parochet was designed and created by member artist Shoni Golin-Cahn.
Our permanent address at 2400 Section Road in Amberley Village is geographically central in the region, relatively affordable in terms of housing stock, and at the center of Jewish life in Cincinnati. Amberley Village affords close access to major regional thoroughfares, the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway and Interstates 75 and 71.
Residents of Amberley Village enjoy short commutes to downtown and all areas of greater Cincinnati for business and work. The location also facilitates easy access to museums, ball parks, parks, the Aronoff Center, Playhouse in the Park, and downtown businesses and social events.
Amberley Village is home to the core institutions of committed Jewish life including 6 synagogues (more than any other community in Cincinnati), a new mikveh, the Mayerson JCC, Jewish Family Service, the Jewish Federation, and Cincinnati Hebrew Day School, one of the two Jewish day schools in Cincinnati. Amberley Village residents are in close proximity to regularly patronize all the approved kosher restaurants.
