Social Action Committee
Pirkei Avot teaches that the world is built on three things -- Torah study, prayer, and acts of loving-kindness. Thus, in addition to our dedication to learning and worship, Sha'arei Torah gives significant attention to community-building, outreach, and social action work. Sha'arei Torah's Social Action Committee undertakes and supports both local and international efforts at Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
The Committee completed its first major community outreach event in February 2014, by taking responsibility for stocking the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry. Jewish Family Service Heldman Family Food Pantry is the source for free kosher and non-kosher food, fresh produce, personal care, and household care items for individuals in the Greater Cincinnati Jewish community experiencing financial difficulties as well as anyone in need living in the Clifton neighborhood. The food pantry services 160 families each month.
Since then, our families (with terrific help from our children!) collect donations for the Heldman Food Pantry at least twice/year. The Social Action Committee has several additional regular projects. Twice annually we shop, cook and serve meals to individuals seeking a hot meal at the Queen City Kitchen in Over the Rhine in downtown Cincinnati. Once/year we work with the Mayerson JCC to sponsor and organize a Jewish Community Blood Drive with Hoxworth Blood Center.
